This month I will have been in my current job for two years. Which means I haven’t been a newspaper reporter for two years, either. Wow …
*sad face*
Journalism, I felt, was truly my vocation. My life calling. But within five years of graduating from college (a place I worked my ass to get to, stay in and now get to spend years paying off), my vocation was faltering for a variety of reasons and I switched careers to keep afloat financially. Luckily I transitioned into a job where skills like interviewing and storytelling are still appreciated, though the goals are admittedly different. But I’m ok with that because now I can pay my bills all by myself, contribute to my retirement fund and savings account, and take The Kid to her favorite place to eat once a month.
At the current gig, I first had my own office (with a window, which apparently is something to be desired) which sounds great, I guess, but for me it was sad and lonely. I put in a candy dish which drew in visitors, but I gained weight and cracked a filling on a Tootsie roll, so the candy dish had to go. The white walls were stifling. Then I was moved into a larger office to share with other people — which suits me just fine because I miss working in the white noise of a newsroom. Yay! Now, my officemates and I work, pull up a Pandora station, brainstorm, converse. There is always energy in the room. I actually get to know my co-workers, the people with whom I spend the most amount of my waking hours with. But still, those white walls were so devoid of any personality, especially during the holidays when campus got very quiet and snowbound — it felt like The Shining.
CUE THE SCARY MUSIC!
So this year on The List, I put “buy a piece of original art.” Somehow, sometime ago I stumbled upon the Art&Ghosts website and was sucked in. I daydreamed about decorating The Kid’s room with the hauntingly whimsical figures, but The Kid, I try to remember and respect, has her own opinions about how her space should look (and I lack the funds to decorate a fickle child’s bedroom). But I did have those naked and depressing office walls. And I knew which print I would buy, but when I would actually go online to gaze at it lovingly, though, it was usually sold out or I lacked the funds at that very specific time to buy the very affordable print.
Until a few weeks ago.
Is it considered an impulse purchase if you’ve been coveting something for literally maybe more than a year and woke up one day not knowing you would finally purchase your heart’s desire by the end of the day?
*happy dance*

Very cool office addition. Makes me think of Alice in Wonderland. And that artist has some fun stuff. I may be considering a purchase now, too …
